Paving Your Driveway More Successfully

Three Reasons You Should Have Asphalt Seal Coat Applied To Your Asphalt Surfaces

After you have had an asphalt surface installed, such as an asphalt driveway, asphalt parking lot, or asphalt blacktop, it is strongly recommended that you have an asphalt seal coat applied. However, after having just spent money to have a new surface installed, you may wonder if applying a seal coat is something you really need to do and why. Here are three reasons why you should always have an asphalt seal coat applied to your asphalt surfaces.

Seal Coat Helps to Prevent Your Asphalt Surface From Fading

One of the reasons why you should have an asphalt seal coat applied to your new asphalt surface is because the seal coat helps to protect your asphalt surface from fading. The seal coat helps to reflect the sun's ultraviolet rays, which helps your asphalt surface to look dark for as long as possible, instead of the gray color that asphalt becomes when it fades.

Seal Coat Fills in Pores, Preventing Water and Oil From Seeping Into Your Asphalt

One of the biggest reasons why you should have an asphalt seal coat applied to your asphalt surfaces is because the seal coat helps to fill in the pores of the porous asphalt surface. This helps to prevent water, oils, and other liquids from seeping into your asphalt. This is important, as your asphalt is more likely to develop cracks, potholes, or other types of damage due to water or liquids that seep through the asphalt.

Seal Coat Makes Your Asphalt Surfaces Easier to Clean and Maintain

The final reason why you should have an asphalt seal coat applied to your asphalt surface is that the seal coat helps to make your asphalt surfaces easier to clean. Dirt, dust, and pollen cannot seep into the pores of your asphalt when the asphalt is sealed. This makes pressure washing your asphalt surface faster, helping to reduce the amount of time it takes you to get your asphalt surface clean.

While you can purchase seal coats at hardware and home improvement stores, they are not the same as the ones that a professional has access to and can apply. As such, seal coating is a task that you should always leave to an asphalt paving contractor. If you have recently had a new asphalt surface installed, ask the asphalt installation company if they can apply the seal coat. Your asphalt must fully harden or cure before the seal coat can be applied, so ideally, you should wait at least a couple of weeks to have the coating applied to best protect your new surface.
